New Recycling Collections Confuse Barlestone Residents

Residents of Barlestone were left last week in what seemed to be various states of confusion regarding the new recycling system put in place by Leicester City Council for 2011.

Thursday January 20th saw the beginning of a new recycling collection. Houses were informed about this via a leaflet delivered to homes towards the end of 2010, but come bin day, most homes seemed unaware of the new recycling service, and opted instead to either continue putting out the same bins as last year, some bins, or in an effort to ensure their rubbish was collected, all of their bins!

The new recycling system now sees the Black (non-recyclable waste) bin be put out on its own on Thursday January 13th and every fortnight thereafter. Thursday January 20th and every fortnight thereafter now sees the Brown (garden waste) bin, the Yellow (cardboard and paper) bag, and the Blue (tin, bottle and plastic) bag all put out at once.

This coming Thursday will see if residents of Barlestone will realise that it is a Black bin only collection. Hopefully neighbours will notice bins already put out on their street and copy those in the know.

Barlestone Road (B582 Barlestone – Newbold Verdon) Finally Re-surfaced

This week saw the B582 between Barlestone and Newbold Verdon re-surfaced as part of ongoing road maintenance by Leicestershire County Council.

Local community members including Barlestone Parish Council and Counciller Bill Crooks have been campaigning for the road to be re-surfaced for some time, but the road has always been a low priority for the Council.

However, beginning on Wednesday July 13th 2010 the road was closed for three days as work took place. Newbold Road in Barlestone was closed at Meadow Road with diversions in place for all traffic. The local bus service (Arriva routes 152 and 153 were diverted out of Barlestone towards Market Bosworth, before turning towards Newbold Verdon to rejoin their usual route before entering Newbold itself.

Work lastest for three days until the road was re-opened on Friday July 15th to all traffic. Now complete, the road now has a completely new tarmac surface from the top of Newbold Road, all the way down Barlestone Road to the junction to Newbold Heath. Gone are all pot holes, oncovered surfaces and scars left by previous roadwork. All traffic markings have also been re-applied including the white speed warnings to the entrance of Barlestone and the read ’30’ zone markings.

Proceeds from the Street Parade will be used to boost the funds for the chosen beneficiary for 2010/11.

Conservative MP David Tredinnick Retains Bosworth in 2010 General Election Result

Thursday May 6th saw the UK vote in the national General Election. Dispite strong competition, David Tredinnick held onto his Bosworth constituency for another term – a seat he has held since 1987. Tredinnick secured 23,132 votes – 42.6% of votes overall.

The overall vote for Bosworth saw a 5.9% swing from Conservative to Liberal Democrats. Lib Dem candidate Michael Mullaney secured 18,100 votes for second place in the vote, representing 33.3% of all votes cast.

Labour candidate Rory Palmer came third, with 8,674 (16%) of the vote. Tredinnick therefore remains as MP for Bosworth, however with a slightly reduced majority of 5,032. This is a 9.3% reduction on his previous majority over the Labour Party in 2005.

Overall the turnout was higher than the 2005 General Election with 54,274 people turning out to vote. Back in 2005, 47,499 people in Bosworth voted – 4.6% less than in 2010. Back then, Tredinnick won with 20,212 votes, which also represented 42.6% of the total votes cast.

David Tredinnick saw off competition from rising Liberal Democrat support in the Hinckley and Bosworth area, as well as reports in 2009 highlighting Tredinnick’s involvement in the ongoing MPs expenses scandal.
